recs and other things
Mar. 23rd, 2014 06:27 pmi'm getting a very nice tax return this year and i've decided i should probably spend some of that money on the dentist. i've not been to the dentist in appr. six years because i've not been able to afford it. i've been looking around for a dentist i like, and i found one that people i know have recommended, and who also offers a student discount. i'm now just trying to find an empty slot in my schedule for the actual visit - which, i'm sad to say, at this rate won't be until may :( i need to keep as many slots open as possible in case i get a job interview for the dictionary job, and i've got a fuckload of work the next couple of weeks so i've got little time as is. i won't have time at all right after the easter hols and then suddenly it's May. UGH. i might as well wait with booking the dentist until i've heard back from the dictionary people, i guess.
i'm going to edinburgh next week la la la in five days i'm in edinburgh la la la
anyway, on to the way overdue recs. these are all from the past couple of weeks/months. yeah i know, i haven't read much. at least goodreads is telling me i'm halfway through my goal for this year....because i've read a shitton of comics. those i will talk about later, as i'm reading the kid!loki stuff and i need to write a proper post about it and also revise the goddamn reading order the internet gave me, because it turns out it's not really that good a reading order. AHEM. recs.

Summary: While it's not like Dean hasn't had a couple of truly regrettable hit-and-runs in his sexual history, this is probably the saddest fucking thing that has ever happened to him.
Why you want to read this: this was a re-read recently, when i was in need of something happy and cute and squeeworthy. it is exactly that - upon re-read i found there was a lot more smut than i remembered there being, which was kind of meh, but ymmv. it's got just the right amount of flangst, hilarity, sam, and sweetness and it made me smile so so so much.

Series: Part 5 of Children of Lesser Gods
Summary: It’s been two years since the incident in Budapest, and Phil and Clint’s paths cross again. A lot of things have changed in the meantime; others have remained the same.
Why you want to read this: ok, i will say this upfront - this one is special. and while i've linked only to the latest part in the series, this is really a rec for the entire series. i watched this come to life over the months (years at this point, i believe) and i've betated and betaed it again, and read and re-read it over and over and i absolutely fucking love it. you will want to start at the beginning. first of all, a big part of why i love this series is the care michi's taken into making it fit into the MCU. there's nothing here that isn't canon as in there's no canon that's been tweaked for the sake of plot. instead she's filled out the empty spaces in the MCU with a large cast of original characters as well as some from the comics(this is the second big reason why i love it). this is action packed while also giving us a lot of character development, it's exciting and fast and thrilling but also funny and sweet and plain awesome. this gives us the nit and grit of SHIELD and all the shadow work and international crises you could wish for.
basically, this series is what Agents of SHIELD is trying (and failing) to be, while also giving us the beginnings of the friendships and relationships that is Clint, Natasha and Phil. i love it. i love everything about it. Oh and. The series is endgame Clint/Phil, but there's a lot of stuff that happens before that. It's a long ride.

Characters: Hugo Weasley, Scorpius Malfoy, Draco Malfoy, Bellatrix Lestrange, Luna Lovegood, Pansy Parkinson, Hermione Granger
Summary: A Hugo Weasley mystery. Someone has died under mysterious circumstances, and Hugo Weasley, private dick, is on the case. Who done it? Well let me know at what chapter You figured it out.
Why you want to read this: I read this because I thought it was a Hugo/Scorpius fic. It wasn't - at least not in the sense that one would expect. They are a couple, but their relationship is not in any relevant to the story, it is just there. What this story is really about is the murder mystery and the people involved in it (see pairing tags). It was a lovely read, and while it tweaked some canon (it's possible the writer misremembered? who knows), i thought it was well done all the same. A very interesting read for one, and I was pleasantly surprised. It's on the darker side, though - I'd put in warning for dubious consent and torture.

Corde Desidirium Tuum (39173 words) by LadySlytherin
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
Rating: Explicit (rating is really PG)
Relationships: Scorpius Malfoy/Hugo Weasley
Summary: Scorpius Malfoy had always known exactly what he wanted. So why, when faced with The Mirror of Erised, did he see nothing but fog?
He must use a summer abroad with his best friend's family to reevaluate everything he thought he knew about himself. Will he realize what he truly wants before it's too late or will he lose something he never imagined he'd want before he's had a chance to have it?
Why you want to read this: This was super cute and sweet and just the right length too. If you're looking for a coming of age (including travel!) fic with all the right tropes, this one's a sure hit. Scorpius was adorable, if a little slow on the uptake, and Hugo was delicious. Very sweet, a little dainty flower type of guy, but he will surprise you. I did have a few reservations about this fic and had to sleep on it (mostly because the tropes in the fic are not really my cup of tea), but ultimately, I still enjoyed it. It really is very sweet and I rather liked that Scorpius was a bit of a dick at times. Also there's a huuge cast of characters in this fic! I liked them all. Even if they didn't get much screentime, they still felt very real.

Alternate Links to Fic: ff.net
Pairing: Hugo/Scorpius
Rating: PG
Author's Summary: Scorpius Weasley comes from a calm, quiet family. He's not prepared for his first Rock Festival, and needs someone to rescue him!
Why everyone should read this: This is super sweet. I loved Scorpius wanting to go to a rock festival and then realise what actually happens at one - poor thing wasn't expecting a mosh pit. The prompt for this fic was "a pack of brutish weasleys" and it delivers! It's adorable and funny, and Hugo and Scorpius' interactions were lovely.

Pairing: Hugo/Scorpius
Rating: PG-13 for the first part, NC-17 for the rest.
Author's Summary: N/A
Why everyone should read this: When I went digging through my notes to find fics to rec, I saw that this little series was marked simply "YES GOOD". I re-read it, and the sentiment still stands. This is both really sweet and very sexy; I'm in love with Hugo's quiet confidence and arousal, and Scorpius' internal monologue in regards to Hugo. They're an explosive pair, it feels like, but still so utterly...sweet. It made me smile so much when I read it, so I hope it makes you smile as well.

Rating: Explicit
Relationships: Peter Parker/Wade Wilson, Deadpool/Spiderman
Additional Tags: First Time, Humor, Spideypool, cross-dressing, Bromance, Pancakes
Summary: Peter’s known Wade for a while now, so he can maybe see how this makes sense -- like, maybe Wade has a thing about going commando and just happened to have an old girlfriend’s panties lying around, one thing led to another…but…
“And the bra?” Peter croaks.
Why you want to read this: i LOVED this in a way i can't really articulate. I just really, really loved it. I loved all the nuances in it, I loved the fact Wade was having a conversation with the yellow and white box without it being obnoxious and in your face - basically the only reason you knew it, was because Peter was confused about Wade's onesided conversations with nobody. I loved that these two idiots are both, well, idiots, i loved loved loved Wade. WADE. BB. I love that they're happy. I love that they (probably) will have issues. I just. have a soft spot a mile wide for this ship and this fic is just straight up perfect.A Beginner's Guide to Communing with the Dead (77159 words) by suspiciousflashlight
Fandom: Supernatural

Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Castiel/Dean Winchester, Jessica Moore/Sam Winchester
Characters: Bobby Singer, Charlie Bradbury, Lilith (Supernatural), Jo Harvelle, Victor Henriksen, Kevin Tran
Summary: Maybe it's the little girl whose disappearance turned into a murder, and whose murder turned into a cold case, and who has now apparently decided to move in with him. Maybe it's the unacceptable hole left in his life when his dumb best friend and partner in (the prevention of) crime decided to go and get himself killed. Maybe it's his brother, whose high-profile career and fantastic girlfriend and first-child-on-the-way are steadily leaving Dean in the dust. Pick one. Pick all of them. The why doesn't matter so much as the what, and the what is this: Dean is pretty sure he's going completely, certifiably insane. Sure, he hasn't started wearing all his clothes inside out, and he still showers on a regular basis (anyways, that's not crazy, just a little eccentric); but there's no getting around the fact that he just threw away his life, his career, and his reputation by dragging out his mom's old necromancy book and summoning a Class A Forbidden Entity to his attic. A cranky one, too. With horrendous bed-head.
Why you want to read this: HEY LOOK IT'S A SUPERNATURAL AU BUT IT'S SUPERNATURAL. this is the kind of fic I didn't know I wanted until I suddenly had it. IT IS SO GOOD. it's funny, lovely, sweet and thrilling all at once. I'm in love with the extensive worldbuilding. Magic! I loved that there were different types of magic and I loved that Dean (and, as is implied, his mother) is really good at Necromancy, which is illegal, I just. I love everything. AND MOST OF ALL I LOVE THE FACT THAT SPOILER: CAS GAVE HIS OWN BODY LIFE LIKE i love subtle things ok and cas builds himself a human body and he's super proud of it and there's a moment where dean wonders about the starshaped scar on his skin which appears somewhere along the way and then after Dean is brought back to life by Cas he as the same kind of scar and it's because CAS BREATHED LIFE INTO HIM OK CAS BUILT HIMSELF A HUMAN BODY AND THEN BREATHED LIFE INTO THE HUMAN BODY SO THAT IT WOULD LIFE AND AGE AND BE REAL and i just i don't know why i loved that bit so much it just really got to me aaaaaaaahhhh /end spoiler. so basically read it and love it, okay?
Title: The Assumption of the Winchesters (Plus Bobby)
Author:
Pairing: Dean/Castiel, Sam/Jess, jokes about Sam/Gabriel, lots of other random minor pairings
Rating: PG13
Warnings: spoilers through all of season 5 to be safe, tons of blasphemy (but with a smile!)
Word Count: ~9,400
Notes: This fic is stupidly, stupidly, ridiculously happy. I was just feeling really depressed about the whole situation the boys have found themselves in, and I wanted them to have some happiness. So I wrote this.
Summary: In which the Winchesters (plus Bobby) ascend into Heaven, Michael the archangel is Chad Michael Murray, John Winchester is BFFs with God, Sam does jello shots with Moses and Noah, Jesus beats Dean in poker, and God wants to know what the hell it is with the Winchesters and space bandits.
Why you want to read this: want something hilarious and where everything ends well? THIS IS FOR YOU. This made me laugh and grin so much and at one point i nearly choked to death laughing, so there's that. a slice of fluff and hilarity for those days where cheering up is priority.
