I have done a little tidy up - mostly I revoked access/unsubscribed where the other person did not grant me access and did not subscribe to me, and the rest was mostly people who hadn't posted in more than 26 weeks (though tbh I think the journal that had been most recently updated of those had a 48 weeks date on it...).

What I said earlier this week still stands: if anybody wants to take the opportunity to remove me from their flist, no questions asked and no hard feelings, feel free. I understand that while friending memes can be fun it can turn out that you just don't vibe with one or more of the people you friended at the time. I'll check in a week or so and if anybody has revoked my access/unsubscribed I'll do the same.

I do want to be absolutely clear on one point, however: anybody who willingly pays for Harry Potter merchandise/streams the new tv show/buys JKR's other books/in any other way has no qualms to continue to financially contribute to JKR's wealth, is not welcome here.

I don't give a shit if you read/write HP fanfiction, but continuing to put money into JKR's pockets as well as those who have of their own free will chosen to align with her or participate in projects she financially benefits from is really not acceptable to me. That does absolutely include the new HP tv show. every single adult involved with that show chose to do it when they could've turned it down. discovering that Hans Zimmer, who did some of the scoring for the show, is also a transphobe, has really hammered this point home for me. JKR, known transphobe, attracts other transphobes. Shocker. (Water is wet, fork found in kitchen, etc.) Don't be a transphobe.

comments

this has been going around and I couldn't resist having a go. It seems to vary whether to include a fic link or not, but I decided to include my links.

Meme Rules: How many letters of the alphabet have you used for [starting] a fic title? One fic per line, ‘A’ and 'The’ do not count for 'A’ and ’T’. Post your score out of 26 at the end, along with your total fic count.

A - Anthony J Crowley Fell
B - Baklava
C - Come to Naples
D - darling tonight, i've got you in my sights
E - Esarina Anastasia of Volstov, first of her name
F - the five year plan or if it doesn't count if it's prefaced by 'the' then here's an alternative: Four Names
G - Grim Winter Was Howlin'
H - honeyed
J - Joy Ride
K - Kaffe
L - longing
M - Molasses
N - no gentlemen left
O - Of Gilded Wallpaper and Meddling Dragons
P - patron saint of whores
Q - Quickie
R - Rose Trees
S - somebody else's wallet
T - til solen står op
U - untitled I think this one might be considered cheating, so here's an alternative: Up all night to get Bucky
V - Vasketøj
W - We're Sure to Grow Old Together
X -
Y -
Z -

23/26, which I think is pretty good! I had multiple choices for several of the letters so I tried to prioritise by picking the most recent. Not having one that starts with Y seems odd as it's not that rare, for English, but I couldn't find one on my main account.

Total number of ao3 works: 123 (not all are fics and I can't be arsed to go through and subtract art and fanbindings from the total.)

comments

It’s time for another (only my second, I believe) Friday open thread, inspired by dolorosa_12, who I've long admired for keeping these going weekly - mine are going to continue to be irregular! This one is inspired by those moments when you don’t have a camera at hand to take a photo - or maybe, like me, you decided to enjoy the moment as it was without thinking about camera angles or framing or later posting.

This is your invitation to describe a moment where you stopped to take it in without a camera.

I’ll go first:

Earlier this week I was running late to work due to multiple train cancellations and delays, so I walked a more direct route from the train station to the office - right past the outer moat of the citadel. It was a rare sunny morning with little wind, biting cold, the leaves on the footpath already churned into brown mud. Out on the water, a short distance up ahead, visible through the still-green branches of a large willow tree, was a pair of swans. Suddenly, one swan took umbrage with the other and hared off, wings angrily fluttering, until it settled down somewhere in the distance.

I passed the tree, and there, the moat abruptly turned inwards back to the centre of the star, flanked on both sides by trees dressed in yellow and orange. I slowed down. On the water was the swan left behind, slowly floating towards its mate, the dark ripples in the water gently breaking up the fiery reflections of the trees. As I watched, now stock still while other people rushed past me on the footpath, a gust of wind shook the largest of the trees, and a rain of yellow beech leaves fluttered down and formed golden little boats in the water around the swan.

comments

I did start posting chapters on AO3 on April 20th 2024 and I was determined to finish this fic before or on that date - and well, today is April 20th 2025, and I put the final touches on the last two chapters and did several rounds of edits, and now the chapters are up and posted and I am DONE. There is another one coming as well afaik, Point of Graves - which was supposed to come before this one, but then Stuff Happened I guess, and now we get this novella instead, ahead of Ppint of Graves. I'm not complaining. Also now that I'm like, safely landed in Denmark and all, with an INCOME, I can re-start my patreon subscriptions, including Melissa Scott. She's been sharing snippets from the Astreiant verse for a while so if there are any other fans here then there is a veritable treasure trove over at patreon waiting for you.

I literally just started reading another book that I think I'll need to commit to finishing before I can jump onto this. I might even re-read all of Astreiant...

The elevator pitch, for those who want one: this series is a police procedural set in a secondary world where astrology is real and magic. the setting is vaguely renaissance Italy, the main characters are queer, and their relationship progresses so lovely, in my opinion. they are adults, trying to make things work. These could also be described to have elements of mannerpunk as there is a strong thread of exploration of class, gender, and politics - the setting is matriarchal and somewhat queernormative, and really explores what that actually means.

these books are NOT m/m romance and if somebody tries to pitch them to you that way they are misleading you; these are fantasy novels far more than they are romance novels, and each book is a standalone mystery rooted in the fantastical and magical world it's set in. there is no on-screen smut, at most you'll get some flirting and kissing on screen. the get-together also happens off-page.

these books are major comfort reads for me and I really want them to do well so we can get more books, so if this sounds interesting do give them a try and leave a review somewhere.

comments

I had a lovely Christmas Eve with my family, and then yesterday and today I've spent my time reading Yuletide fic, re-watching all Ocean's movies, and writing fic. I'd hoped I'd be able to post a new chapter of my ongoing Afdeling Q wip before Christmas, but what with the move and my Yuletide commitments that wasn't possible. I'm now aiming to post a new chapter by the 28th, as last time I updated was 28th november and I was a bit surprised to discover it's almost been a month.

anyway, Yuletide recs! starting with my gift, a lovely selection of moments of Danny/Rusty (with background poly), including Tess and Rusty getting along, and an appearance from Debbie - and the reason why I decided to rewatch the Ocean's movies:

ain't that a kick in the head (2010 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Ocean's Eleven Trilogy (Movies)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Danny Ocean/Rusty Ryan, Danny Ocean/Tess Ocean
Characters: Danny Ocean, Rusty Ryan, Tess Ocean
Additional Tags: Pre-Canon, Background Poly
Summary: danny ocean, 11 moments

before I go into the rest of the Yuletide recs I also want to give a shout to this gift fic:

The Laws of Thermodynamics (5163 words) by berlincorpography
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Ocean's Eleven Trilogy (Movies)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Danny Ocean/Rusty Ryan, Danny Ocean/Tess Ocean, Tess Ocean & Rusty Ryan
Characters: Rusty Ryan, Danny Ocean, Tess Ocean
Additional Tags: Pre-Canon, Polyamory, a story mostly about how tess and rusty should unionise
Summary: The three laws of thermodynamics, as described in American Scientist, March 1964:

First law: You can’t win, you can only break even.
Second law: You can only break even at absolute zero.
Third law: You can’t reach absolute zero.

I got the gift notification for this in November and instantly thought 'aw hell, somebody messed up their Yuletide posting didn't they? I will pretend I didn't see it. but lemme click through real fast and read it before they realise their mistake...' and it turned out it wasn't a Yuletide mess up, but it was in fact Yuletide related: berlincorpography wrote my Danny/Rusty Yuletide gift last year. this was the fic they initially wrote, realised it was maybe veering too close to my DNWs and pivoted to write something else, but then finished this up anyway and gifted me anyway, and I am delighted!! It does not in fact veer too close to any of my DNWs and I love it very much.

More Yuletide recs under these cuts!
( Ocean's 8&11 )

( Temeraire )

the following three fics are 2 x Temeraire and 1x Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - I'm grouping them together instead of under their own fandoms, because they are academic takes on canon and I'm both amused an delighted that there are three whole fics in this genre in fandoms I enjoy.

( academia (2x Temeraire, 1x JSAMN) )

I'm still reading, so I hope to be back with more recs later.

comments

I don't usually do any open discussion posts (I am not a community builder, alas), but I want to open this one up widely, so do feel free to link to it elsewhere.

I've recently watched two different miniseries based on books, one was a re-watch and the other was new to me. One of these miniseries is in my opinion superior to the book while the other was definitely good, but I preferred the book.

My question is: What story do you feel was served better by a TV or film adaptation than by its original form? What made it better, and why?

I'll go first: Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

This was the kind of book that on the surface looked tailor made to my tastes - I love rock music and have spent a considerable amount of my time being super into specific bands, going to concerts and collecting merch and setlists and getting tickets signed, and obsessing over band members. So when I heard of this novel, I thought: here is a book for me!

Unfortunately, I didn't really like the book. The interview format was fine but I wasn't keen on the twist, and in written form Daisy Jones especially came across like the only thing that was going on for her was the substance abuse and being mad that she didn't get what she wanted. my biggest issue by far was that I couldn't listen to any of the music. On paper the songs sounded great, and being familiar with a lot of (but not all) rock music of the time period, I could sort of imagine what the songs were meant to sound like, or vibe like, but ultimately, they were just words on paper. This book was a bit of a let down for me.

Then the TV series (on Amazon Prime in the UK) came along and I gained a whole new appreciation for the story. There was a constant running soundtrack of music from real bands alongside the fictional one, with new music written for the TV series in the appropriates style. And each song is a banger! The interview format worked so much better with the series presented as a hybrid of video interviews, like a documentary, interspersed with flashback bits. it also made it less jarring when the interview bits suddenly stopped being a documentary and started being present-time scenes outside the filmed interview. (does that make sense?) The twist also felt a lot less annoying as the actors brought a lot of body language, expressions, and tone to the interview format that wasn't there in writing, that enriched their relationship with the past and the interviewer. And of course: the music. I re-watched this series recently and loved it just as much the second time.

Of course this specific series wouldn't have existed without the book, so it's not fair to say that it should've been made as a TV series from the start and that we don't need the book, but personally I would recommend the TV series over the book in this case.

What about you?

Please note this is not the place for absolutist the-book-is-always-better-no-matter-what opinions. Be kind and respectful to one another in the comments.

comments

Today has been a hot, sunny day, possibly the last of the season, so I took the opportunity to wash my summer duvet, hang it outside to dry, and then put it away to swap it for the winter duvet, which I washed in spring before putting away. (it's a bit soon to swap it out, but I don't mind.) I also washed the mattress protector and the pillowcase (my pillow has a protective case that can be washed) and put on fresh sheets, so my bed is now all fresh.

I've had a very fun discussion about Star Trek TOS and mid-century pulp sci-fi vs modern sci-fi over in scanfic (in Danish/Swedish), which led me to revisit a binding I did last year for a bookbinding competition with climate change as theme. I didn't win anything in the competition, but I had a lot of fun putting the book together. As part of it, I also read a lot of different texts to curate a selection for the book (I believe most traditional binders just choose one existing text and bind it), and wrote forewords. So the binding is unique in many ways. Anyway, the point is to say, I wrote the forewords in a kind of frenzy as I was working to a deadline, but revisiting the binding and the texts I'd curated and the forewords themselves, I thought, hey actually this is pretty good? So under the cut is the foreword for the fiction half plus the links to the (publicly accessible) texts if anybody wants to read along. (the foreword for the non-fic half is very 'I have no brain left and I just need to fill this page', ha.)

( Earth is Missing! and other stories [foreword] )

comments

so, I've watched the entirety of 9-1-1 including what's been aired of s7. thank you tumblr for alerting me to the existence of this show? I had never heard of it, or the fandom, until the 'Buck is bi now??' shock wave so realising that there are 50k fics on ao3 is a bit like...idk, discovering a whale just swam over your head? that's a sizeable fandom to never have heard of before! anyway, i am enjoying it, and will happily take recs. I don't have a horse in this ship race though I absolutely get the appeal of Buck/Eddie.

in other fandom news, I have found my writing mojo again and so have decided to post the first chapter of my current wip:

til solen står op (2361 words) by nerakrose
Chapters: 1/?
Fandom: Afdeling Q | Department Q (Movies)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Assad/Carl Mørck, Assad & Carl Mørck
Characters: Carl Mørck, Assad (Afdeling Q), Marcus Jacobsen
Additional Tags: Aftermath of Violence, Police Brutality, All Cops Are Bastards, Whump, Forced Outing, Eventual Happy Ending, Assad Whump, WIP Tags
Summary:
"Der er to tusind klagesager mod politiet hvert år.
as it happened, I did not have time to read anything else from the collection before reveals and I'm doubtful I'll have time today either, so, this is a repeat of the gifts I received + the two fics I wrote.

my gifts:

One Who Kneels (3027 words) by VirginiaPlain64
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Shetland (TV)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Duncan Hunter/Jimmy Perez, Duncan Hunter/Donna Killick, Duncan Hunter/Fran Hunter Perez, Fran Hunter Perez/Jimmy Perez
Characters: Duncan Hunter, Jimmy Perez, Cassie Perez (Shetland), Donna Killick, Fran Hunter Perez
Additional Tags: Pining, Masturbation, Whiskey & Scotch, Pre-Slash, Angst, Yuletide Treat, Fantasizing, Internalized Homophobia, Self-Pity, Introspection, Character Study, Sweaters
Summary: Duncan searches Jimmy's bedroom. He goes out for a swim in the river, to rinse off the worst of the day’s sweat, and then comes inside to the warm bath that Caius prepared for him. It’s scented with lavender and rose, the water turned milky by oats - good for Al’s hardened hands, his weathered skin. Caius has already had his own bath, but he washes Al’s hair for him, untangles it gently and extricates hay and wildflowers. Forget-me-nots like to cling, and while Caius doesn’t understand how a weed that grows on the ground winds up so high that it filters into Al’s hair, he finds it charming all the same.

do I think it's very funny that berlincorpography and I wound up writing each other ocean's 11 fic? yes absolutely. yuletide is huge, but fandoms are small.

comments

I received three Yuletide gifts! I am on the FLOOR about it.

First one up is this introspective Duncan POV BBC Shetland fic:

One Who Kneels (3027 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Shetland (TV)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Duncan Hunter/Jimmy Perez, Duncan Hunter/Donna Killick, Duncan Hunter/Fran Hunter Perez, Fran Hunter Perez/Jimmy Perez
Characters: Duncan Hunter, Jimmy Perez, Cassie Perez (Shetland), Donna Killick, Fran Hunter Perez
Additional Tags: Pining, Masturbation, Whiskey & Scotch, Pre-Slash, Angst, Yuletide Treat, Fantasizing, Internalized Homophobia, Self-Pity, Introspection, Character Study, Sweaters
Summary:
Duncan searches Jimmy's bedroom. What is he really looking for?

Next one up is this delightful Ocean’s 8 fic showing the development of Danny and Rusty’s relationship from their early teen years together and up, through humour and hurt/comfort situations, and I just love it a lot:

bet your bottom dollar (2447 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Ocean's Eleven Trilogy (Movies)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Danny Ocean/Rusty Ryan
Characters: Danny Ocean, Rusty Ryan, Tess Ocean
Additional Tags: 5+1 Things, Hurt/Comfort, background Danny Ocean/Tess Ocean, Pre-Canon
Summary:
In some ways, it would have been easier if he was still mad at Danny. It would have been easier if the time and distance had left them foreign to each other. It would, fundamentally, have been easier if he hadn’t gotten damningly hard under the table the second Danny started talking.

And last but not least - somebody wrote me Afdeling Q fic! I absolutely should not be playing favourites but since I never once hoped I would receive a fic for this fandom I am absurdly delighted and also I really enjoyed this: grumpy!Carl grumping his whole way through bed sharing with the object of his desires until he grumpily confessed and things can get moving? Simply wonderful, I love it. So in character.

Better Than Milk and Honey (1881 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Afdeling Q | Department Q (Movies)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Assad/Carl Mørck
Additional Tags: Only One Bed
Summary:
“We might have found another hotel,” Assad said.

Carl scoffed. “At this time of night?
better late than never - now also posted to my DW. links lead to individual chapters on AO3. I actually wanted to make the individual dates on the image clickable and while I know how to do that, I couldn't find an image host equipped to host that kind of specialised file, so, alas. second best option would have been to turn the image into a PDF with links as that's more widely compatible, but a PDF is hard to display nicely imo, so...third best option I suppose? this is also posted to
latest fic is done and posted - I was tweaking the last chapter up until the day of, even though I technically finished writing it on Thursday. how did I wind up with nearly 19k of this when I intended it to be a short and silly 'only one bed' fic?
Hi all - it's time for a flist cleanup. I will be revoking access from and removing from my reading page people who haven't updated their journals in a year or more. I will not be revoking access just because we haven't commented on each other's journals ever or in a while; I'm absolutely shit at that kind of maintanence and don't comment often, and likewise I don't expect comments on my posts. I do read all posts (with few exceptions: if I've been travelling or very busy and haven't had time to keep up) and as far as I'm concerned lurking is fine. What I'm not comfortable with is empty journals having access to mine - who are you??

the other thing is, I will also be revoking access from and removing from my reading page journals that exclusively or almost exclusively post about Harry Potter fandom. I'm sorry folks, but it's time. I don't want to see this stuff on my reading page anymore. I'm glad for your sakes that you are still able to find enjoyment in this fandom, but for me that train has left the station, the city, and the bloody country. HP fandom posts have become for me a constant reminder that an author I once looked up to has become so radicalised that she's turned into the most vile of people, somebody who is actively supporting hate groups and campaigns against people like me and my loved ones (queer, trans, disabled). I just cannot with any JKR-related and HP-related stuff anymore, so it goes. on the off chance that there are people here who don't know the full extent of JKRs bigotry, here's is write up at glamour.com (last updated april 2023), and a write up at vox.com (last updated march 2023). Add to that she's funded anti-independence campaigns as well (I'm very pro-Scottish independence.)

If anybody else wants to take this opportunity to also revoke my access and/or remove me from their reading page, please do feel free, and no hard feelings, no explanation required.

comments

I haven't decided what to do next (novel most likely) but I don't care. what I most want to do is rent all four movies again and watch them again and come up with more fic, and then write it, but alas I need to be Sensible™️ so...another time.

it's been a fun month writing these - I just realised I posted the first one on the 13th august so it's been exactly a month. 5 weeks. 7 fics. just under 20k.
ETA: longer post (in Danish) on scanfic, here.

bryllupsplaner (5793 words) by nerakrose
Fandom: Afdeling Q | Department Q (Movies)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: Det tog Assad tre måneder (plus fem år) at overbevise Carl om at flytte sammen.
