nerakrose: drawing of balfour from havemercy (Default)
I've had a quiet weekend - bingewatched Yuri on ice (so pure, so good) and finished my festivebastion/volstovic cycle holiday exchange fic and posted it to my ao3 drafts; the fest is self posting between Christmas and NYE, and ao3 doesn't have queueing (yet?). I won't be taking my laptop with me over the holidays so ao3 draft seemed the most convenient option for easy posting via tablet later...

Speaking of which, I have packed for the holidays already. I'm only bringing hand luggage and I want to take some things home (primarily books) to leave at my sister's, to minimise the load come April 1st, and I managed to fit almost everything. There'll even be a lot of space freed up by the time I go to Manchester for NYE so I can even do a spot of shopping there. Very little space left to do shopping in Helsinki, but I'll manage. If all else fails I can probably grab chocolates in the airport past security.

(I also packed my passport already - kept having to remind myself, as I'll need it to get in and out of the U.K. won't need it to show it even once to get on my flight to Copenhagen, which is why I keep forgetting that I need it...)

I've also been catching up on [livejournal.com profile] hd_erised this week. So far I've especially enjoyed these:

Characters: Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy
Additional Tags: Fanart, Digital Art, Domestic Fluff, Snow, Community: hd_erised

Why you should look at this: I love everything about this art piece (the falling snow! The perspective! The colour scheme! All the plants! The footie!). I've returned to look at it again a number of times since it was posted. ♥ delightful. Cute. Adorable. And it brings me so much joy.

Relationships: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Characters: Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Blaise Zabini, Pansy Parkinson, Ginny Weasley, Dean Thomas, Neville Longbottom, Seamus Finnigan, Theodore Nott, Morag MacDougal, Original Male Character(s), Original Female Character(s)
Additional Tags: Humor, Shenanigans, a silly mystery, Feels, Comfort, Blow Jobs, Snark, Banter, Hogwarts Eighth Year, Community: hd_erised
Summary: The story of how Harry Potter single-handedly lost Gryffindor the House Cup while attempting to have a “normal” year at Hogwarts. Featuring Harry's suspicious nature turned up to eleven again, a new DADA teacher who is so not here for Harry’s fame, multiple detentions, Slytherins being sneaky, Hufflepuffs being sneakier, and the mystery of Draco Malfoy's hoodie because seriously Hermione who gave that to him and is he wearing it just to torment me? This is ridiculous!
Why you should read this: This is possibly the cutest most adorable fluffy and funny fic I've read in a while. I couldn't stop smiling while reading it. Everything is wonderful, from Draco's hoodie to the banter to the way Harry falls for him and just rolls with it. Honourable mention to the new defense professor, who was hilarious. Love it.

It's Sunday and I need to get back to uni to put in some work on my thesis, but it's Sunday so I indulged in fic this morning before I got out of bed. This currently anon from the Draco tops Harry fest fic was in the hot recs in the daily snitch, which crossed my dash (I love that the daily snitch has a tumblr now, ngl), and when I checked it out how could I resist the promise of almost-50 retired beekeeping Harry? I swear it's become a theme with me, or something, but I just really love mature H/D fics and if they have an element of nature in them I'm also completely sold. And I'm not sorry.

Late Bloomers (12979 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Characters: Hermione Granger, Blaise Zabini, Ron Weasley, Narcissa Black Malfoy, Ginny Weasley
Summary:

Harry always thought he had a pretty satisfying array of sexual fantasies, until he stumbles upon the Mirror of Erised again and sees himself getting banged senseless by Draco Malfoy. Now he can't stop thinking about it, and that summer almost twenty years ago when he'd come to know Malfoy very well indeed.

Why you want to read this: This is beautiful. And so well written that I barely even noticed how smutty the fic is (I usually skip the smutty parts of fic). I love Harry, almost fifty, figuring out what he wants and where he belongs (though he knew all along), and wanting to rekindle what he had with Draco in the past. I love how easy their relationship with each other was/is, despite (or because of?) everything. I love how calm this fic is, how it just flows. I love Harry's friendship with ginny, even though they're finalising their divorce. I love Harry's friendships. I love his bees and his connection with them. This is a magical fic and a magical read, and it's an instant favourite. A real treat.

Title: All the Important Words Unspoken
Author: Anonymous
Recipient: nerak_rose
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco, Hermione/Ron, Astoria Greengrass/the Magna Carta
Rating: PG
Word Count: 73,500
Warnings: none
Summary: Narcissa Malfoy and Amarantha Greengrass just want what’s best for their children. But since it’s 1899, their children are 32 and 27 respectively, and sundry magical and Muggle crises are erupting across Europe, the chances of their plans progressing smoothly are close to zero.

Why you want to read this: giftfic aside, THIS IS AMAZING. have you ever wanted to read a victorian mannerpunk crime novel starring a social justice warrior, a scientist and a cop, that is distinctly not a love triangle, and also gay? and featuring harry, draco and astoria? WELL THIS IS IT. i love everything about this - from astoria's unapologetic activism to the slowest cart chase in history, Horace the bird, all the awkwardness that comes with being gay in 1899, hermione being a storm in combat boots, i just. i love everything. it's funny and sweet and utterly lovely. (also, this fic has 'women getting shit done' written all over it. while harry and draco are on the slowest cart chase in history of ever, astoria and hermione are Getting Shit Done. it's brilliant. (and rather subtly done, i think.))

i've thought about this fic every day since i read it, and occasionally gone back to it to re-read parts that i loved. this is going to stay with me for a while. i'm so happy - you know that feeling when you come across fic that is just so well written and perfect in every aspect, and you just want to sink into it and stay there forever because it feels a little like nothing can ever be as good as this? yeah.

do yourself a favour and read this. it's a gem. a shining diamond. a goddamn arkenstone. I HAVE TOO MANY FEELINGS.

I just discovered this artist on tumblr that does some really amazing things with light and shadow and colours. Especially the inktober pieces are haunting and beautiful, and I had to restrain myself from linking all of them. (There's a couple of nsfw steve/bucky arts on dorkbait's page - I didn't link them here, but just a heads up if you decide to browse.)

art recs. all steve rogers & bucky barnes. )

In other news, I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] rs_small_gifts, against my better judgment...seeing as i'm modding [livejournal.com profile] rs_collab, and I've prep work to do. OH WELL. Sign-ups for small gifts are still open until tomorrow (and claiming opens tomorrow!), so head on over and sign up? It's a low-key (and not anonymous!) holiday themed exchange fest for Remus/Sirius, which is usually absolutely wonderful. Sign-up numbers are looking a little low, so consider joining us?

Characters: Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Luna Lovegood, Pansy Parkinson

Summary: After the war, Draco works at a tv repair shop and Harry breaks things.

feat. sad boys in jumpers and more ABBA than is probably necessary

Why you want to read this: absolutely perfect slow-burn ♥ this entire fic felt like a warm jumper to curl into and be comfortable in. it's just the right amount of sweet and light angst - the angst stems mostly from talking about the past. draco is lovely, harry is lovely, and it's beautifully written. my only complaint is literally that there wasn't enough ABBA, seriously.

Girls In Peacetime Go Dancing (22761 words) by FeelsForBreakfast
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Relationships: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Characters: girl!Harry - Character, Girl!Draco - Character, Girl!Ron, Hermione Granger, Anthony Goldstein
Additional Tags: Gen Fic Disguised as Drarry, Casual drinking, nobody has sex so, 8th year

Summary: When the gang ends up back at Hogwarts for their 8th year, McGonagall proposes a Yule Ball to raise morale and promote inter-house unity. Unfortunately, that means obligatory dance lessons. Even more unfortunately, Harry's a shit dancer and Draco doesn’t know the meaning of ‘follow.’

Feat. the mysteries of fiber art and the repeated butchering of Headmistress McGonagall’s name

Why you want to read this: because this is utterly and completely sweet. it's also funny and a bit off-kilter, like everybody is a stupid teenager - but they are stupid teenagers, and it's just so nice to have them be stupid teenagers after a war, you know? harry's friendship with anthony was brilliant, and harry and draco's growing friendship (and romance) progressed so naturally and sweetly that I was just left with a huge smile. feel good fic. ♥

Title: With A Candle To Guide Me
Songspiration: Monster - Imagine Dragons
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco, brief allusions to Hermione/Ron, Remus/Tonks, Bill/Fleur, past Harry/Ginny
Summary: Draco wakes up in a nightmare, caught in the horror that’s haunted him since childhood. Desperate and trying to make sense of all that’s happened, Draco finds the only person who seems to want to give him answers is Potter. But being near Potter holds questions too—ones Draco isn’t sure he wants to ask. Even if it means turning down a way back to solid ground.
Rating: NC-17
Warning(s): Angst, creature!fic, explicit sex, coarse language, mentions of self-harm
Epilogue compliant? No
Word Count: 29,300

Why you want to read this: this was a really interesting expansion of werewolf and metamorphmagus lore. draco broke my heart a little (blaise! pansy!) and teddy was adorable. it's not light on the angst, but it manages to be sweet and funny too.

Author/Artist LJ Name: Anonymous
Songspiration: Stand and Deliver - Adam Ant
Title: The Phoenix and The Dragon
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco, Draco/Astoria and a few briefly mentioned side pairings
Summary: In the summer of his eighteenth year, Draco Malfoy meets notorious highwayman The Phoenix for the first time. But not the last.
Rating: NC-17
Warning(s): AU, using bits and pieces of canon as I see fit and discarding others on a whim. Canon compliant character deaths (not Harry or Draco). Explicitly bottom!Draco, with discussion of switching. Fake relationships and infidelity within them. Suspension of disbelief, some magic in a non-magic setting.
Epilogue compliant? Nope
Word Count: 30k+

Why you want to read this: harry as a highway dandy slash robin hood! draco as the kidnapee who falls in love with him! i loved pretty much everything about this. there are some cool nods to canon as well.
nerakrose: calvin and hobbes hugging (*hugs*)

I have some ideas for what I'd like to do for this fest, though I'm struggling to decide between teddy/james and hugo/scorpius. i may just have to do both.

This lovely thing is today's offering from smoochfest:

Author: Anonymous
Songspiration: Somebody to Love - Queen
Title: Somebody to Love
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco; brief platonic Draco/Astoria
Summary: Draco's life after the war is quite different than it used to be. When he finds himself cursed, with little hope for lifting the spell, he sets out to make the most of the time he has left. Getting to know his Aunt Andromeda and his young cousin Teddy feels like a good thing to do, even if it can't help him in the long run...or can it?
Rating: PG
Warning(s): Angst. Definitely angst. Mentions of minor character death that have occurred before the start of the action. Small amount of violence. Musings on death and dying, as the prompt warrants.
Epilogue compliant? Nope, definitely not.
Word Count: ~31,400

Why you want to read this: a lovely throwback to H/D fics of old, where cursefics were plentiful (and often heartbreaking). it being smoochfest, the ending can of course only be happy, about which I'm very happy :D it's sweet, low-key (not on the angst) and had me smiling a lot.

also - yesterday i was looking at reclists, and stumbled over this old classic (which also happens to have been pretty formative for me - it was one of the first fics i read for this ship). my heart made a noise, i made a noise, and subsequently i spent most of my evening re-reading it, until i had to get some sleep, and then finished it today. i'm not sure that I can explain why i love this series so much, i just know that it has always done something to my heart that i can't quite explain. i just love it so, so much. it tugs at me and reduces me to this non-person who makes noises at the screen.
so, in case anybody else feels like being reminded that this fic exists, here's your reminder.

Songspiration: Happy - Pharrell
Title: The Girl in the Kneazle Nightie
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco, implied Ron/Hermione and possible Luna/OMC
Summary: All Luna wants is for her friends to be happy. Harry and Draco aren’t going to make it easy for her, but that’s okay. She has a plan.
Rating: PG13
Warning(s): Luna’s brain, original characters, playing merry hell with the dates of solar eclipses because it bloody well suited me.
Epilogue compliant? Not at all. Gleefully EWE.
Word Count: 29,819
Author's Notes: Thank you to my prompter – I took your Luna idea and ran with it. I really hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Also thanks to LB for support and proofreading, and to J for unwittingly inspiring me with musical kitchen utensils!

Why you want to read this: because this is WONDERFUL. i saw this on my flist this morning, and then promptly stayed in bed for another two-three hours reading it. it's delightful and lovely and amazing, and i love it very, very much. it's all from luna's pov and she's written with such care and love here that my heart sings at it. i love luna to bits, but she can be very difficult to pull off - but the writer of this did her beautiful justice. i said in my comment that i'm reminded of auri from the kingkiller chronicles, which is both very inaccurate and extremely fitting at the same time. where auri has neurological disorders that makes her life very difficult and i worry for her a lot, luna is very much the opposite. any neurological disorders she may have, don't make her life difficult, but the thing here is that they're both written with fondness and love and respect. they're not mocked or made fun of or freaks - they're allowed to be who they are. and that, to me, is what makes me love this fic so, so much.
like, honestly, i don't even care about luna's plot to get harry and draco together, all i care about here is luna. do yourself a favour and read this gem. ♥

Ocean Above & Sky Below
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: swearing, descriptions of food and eating, one kiss placed on a character while they are not awake and, thus, incapable of consenting
Word Count: 8000
Summary: Sirius, adrift and floundering at the advanced age of 23, rents out a mansion by the sea— as you do— in an effort to recapture his happiness. It works surprisingly well.
Notes: Much thanks to my team, who have been overwhelmingly kind, even when I forget to respond to them, and my beta, who puts up with much the same. This came from an idea spawned years ago and I’m very happy to have it here in front of me, finally. The title is from the song Sun Gangs, by The Veils.
Prompt: 59 - "Of all the things I wondered about on this land, I wondered the hardest about the seduction of certain geographies that feel like home — not by story or blood but merely by their forms and colors. How our perceptions are our only internal map of the world, how there are places that claim you and places that warn you away. How you can fall in love with the light.” ~ from "The Anthropology of Turquoise: Reflections on Desert, Sea, Stone, and Sky" by Ellen Meloy.
Why you want to read this: Because this is beautiful and lovely and I love it very much. Sirius growing up stories are some of my favourite, and as you all probably know by now, I have a huge soft spot for regulus and his and Sirius' relationship. I'm going to let the excerpts seduce you into reading, I think.

Excerpt 1:
Sirius considered the afternoon as he watched the guests leave. It was, he realized, the first conversation they’d had where they stood on equal footing, he utterly grown and independent. It left him feeling oddly bereft, as if he had lost something before ever realizing he’d had it. He squinted into the dying sun as this thought settled uncomfortably within him, altering his internal landscape. There were new peaks and valleys in him, he realized, looking down into himself. How inexplicable that the tectonic shifts of his own inner self had gone unnoticed for so long.

Excerpt 2:
“Alas,” he announced. “I am truly the last Black to find love. Gods, I can see it now. You and your pretty little scholar, tucked away in a cottage in the woods somewhere, reading poetry to each other and, gods, adopting cats!”

“I like cats,” Sirius said, more pleased than he could say over Regulus’ projected future.

“I know,” Regulus replied, in a tone that made it quite clear what he thought of this devastating character flaw. “You’ll have three cats and rescue woodland animals and be so stupidly, domestically happy that you’ll be impossible to be around. Trust me.”

Some of the amusement went out of him. “It’s really over with Clothilde, then?”

“Absolutely, irrevocably over,” Regulus drawled, armor once more up about him. Sirius did not particularly like his brother, but he did love him very much.

The Effect of a Kiss
Rating: PG (kissing)
Summary: After his encounter with the dementor, almost losing his soul, Sirius is suffering some side-effects. He sends a message to Remus to come and help him. So, Remus does.
why this is awesome: it's a video! It's really, really lovely. The art is beautiful and the way it's cut together in the vid makes for some really evocative storytelling. I'm also impressed as all hell, that must've taken a lot of work and effort to put together!

Static
Rating: PG
Warnings: a sad lack of bare bottoms on display
Image Count: 53
Summary: They have begun to read the patterns in the sound of static.
Why you want to read this: Because you'll want to read it multiple times. You'll want to start at the beginning again aspens again and again until your heart is truly and completely shattered and you feel nothing but pain and love for these boys. HELP ME. I am lost. In all seriousness though, this is amazing and beautiful and you probably all know how much I love this artist's work - it suits itself both to the whimsical and funny as well as the heartbreaking and sad. I love it and I love this and I want you all to love it as much as I do.

Excerpt:
image

No Subtitles Available
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Mentions of homophobia, a tiny bit of very slight cross-dressing, implied sex
Word Count: 12,000
Summary: Potter and Black have always been arrogant and selfish as far as Remus can tell. Having their own, very successful radio show, probably hasn't changed that one bit. But when fate, or more precisely Frank Longbottom, steps in, and Remus finds himself working with Potter and Black, he might have to consider that there's more to them than he's been giving them credit for.
Why you want to read this: Have I mentioned that I love Sirius? I do. Very much. And this right here is lovely in the way Remus is looking at Sirius and seeing the different parts and slowly figuring out what kind of man he is and falling in love with him. It's beautiful. Also, there's a happy ending ;)

Now
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Attempted suicide
Word Count: 12,600
Summary: Sirius’s efforts to save Remus from himself might just involve moving in, raising Teddy, living Muggle, and taking a cooking class for couples. Meanwhile, Remus is quite sure that he isn’t gay, he’s not in love with Sirius, and he doesn’t need help with anything. AU in the sense that Sirius and Remus survive the war.
Why you want to read this: This is lovely - it's everything I love about this kind of AUs and Remus and Sirius at this stage in their life. It's beautiful and I love it. Also I cried. They're perfect.

Excerpt:
Sirius goes into the kitchen to get some champagne for a toast. When he doesn’t come back after about ten minutes, Remus follows him to find that Sirius is crying into a dish towel.

“What’s wrong?” Remus whispers.

“It’s just – it’s stupid --” Sirius says.

“What’s stupid?”

“It’s just – Prongs is going to be a grandfather.” Sirius starts crying again.

Evenings, Mornings, Afternoons
Rating: R
Warnings: dangerously high caffeine content, drunken snogs, bad jokes
Word Count: 5600
Summary: Sirius is a librarian who doesn't read, Remus is a barista who prefers hot chocolate. At least they like each other. Eventually. Probably?
Why you want to read this: this is adorable, cute, fluffy and hilarious. i'm still smiling about this fic. everyone is awesome. please don't miss out on this fic.

Excerpt:

“What did he say? 'Sorry, sir, we're all out of carrot cake'?”

“I know you are cruel to me because you love me,” Sirius said, glowering at James, “but this is a major development.”

“The ringroad is a major development,” James said sagely. “This?” He gestured, as far as Sirius could gather, at the microwave, or possibly the kettle. “This is sad, mate.”

The Psychopomp
Rating: G
Warnings: N/A
Word Count: 60
Summary: The world collapses. You hold it in.
Why you want to read this: do you want your heart broken? do you also want a billion questions and no definite answers? no? well then. this comic is not only super pretty, it also tells in very few frames a very concise story of a Remus caught in a place he can't escape from, it seems, until Sirius comes to get him.

i'm 110% sure that remus is actually dead/dying, and sirius is fetching him into the light, so to speak. only, that makes me sad so i'm also pretending that remus is just stuck in the muggle world for some reason and that sirius went to fetch him back to the wizarding world, ok.

ANYWAY, interpret as you like.

Journey into the Land of the Rising Sun
Rating: PG
Warnings: None!
Word Count:3053
Summary: You see, sute-ki means steak, and suteki means wonderful, and this pun is going to be very helpful when one travels to Japan. A story where part of the grand plan to woo Lily Evans involves visiting Japan.
Why you want to read this: short but cute, with a few lovely, funny phrases. remus is adorable in his grumpyness (i don't blame him!). the marauders were all spot on.

Shot Through the Heart
Rating: G
Warnings: none, unless sad is a warning
Medium: Marker / PS
Summary: There wasn't a body for Remus to bury, just a flash of light he kept seeing out of the corner of his eye.
Notes: Thanks to S.
Prompt: 56 - "Clouds of black birds rose up wailing and screaming, like the thoughts of my heart." ~ Mary Renault
Why you want to look at this: this is striking. i love the contrasts and you can feel remus' pain radiate off the image.
