I dunno when next I'll post recs, as tomorrow I'm travelling to Manchester and will be staying there in excellent company the rest of the year, so my reading may be limited. Guys, there's so much quality at [livejournal.com profile] hd_erised this year, it's crazy.

Family Man is on TV (my mum put it on, and earlier in the week there was a movie with the same plot but where the main character was a woman, I don't remember the title) all of which is giving me a very strong urge to re-read [livejournal.com profile] saras_girl's Turn - who wouldn't rather have their heart broken by H/D than look at nic cage go through the same plot... Amiright??? God, I remember sobbing so hard when I read it, twice, because of course it had to break my heart twice before it was over. In case anyone's forgot about this fic, here's your friendly reminder that it exists and that it's wonderful. I don't have a link at hand - I probably read it on the hex files archive way back when...

Summary: Everyone always forgets about the Merpeople. So did Harry until the day his, Lee’s, and Hermione’s Portkeys land at Reagan National Airport’s Arrivals dais. He’s just had to leave a job he loves and pack his entire life—literally—into his luggage. Then Malfoy and his subplots arrive, and suddenly, saving the world again, one Mermaid at a time, sounds like the perfect excuse to do something he’s always wanted.
Why you should read this:  This is probably my favourite fic of the fest so far! It's funny and brilliant, I love the banter between Harry and Draco, the politics and the science, this particular group of people doing things together, Seabiscuit! Ron and Gawain, etc. And I love this quote (bolding mine):

But the point is, Harry,” she said, finally, “we did enough. You didn’t need to know everything for it to still be a worthwhile experience.”

He frowned, staring down at his hospital sheet. “I suppose not,” he said. “I just hate…” he trailed off.

“Not being in control?” she suggested.

He nodded. “It’s hard.”

“For people like us, I know,” she said. “But this isn’t some book about your life, Harry. Other stories happen that we’re just players in. It’s okay.

I can't really articulate why, so let me just say YES GOOD.

Summary: Harry never expected to spend eighth year listening to Draco Malfoy wanking.
Why you should read this:  For something so smutty as this is, I didn't expect it to be so beautiful. But there's really no other word for it... It's overall lovely, absolutely wonderful. It's got it share of teenage hormones and all the smuttiness that comes with it, and Harry being somewhat oblivious, snark between Harry and Draco, and all that, but what stood out to me was all the things Harry saw (and thus his descriptions), and how beautiful that was.
